About
You are invited to join Coffs Harbour Regional Museum staff and volunteers in celebrating the 140th anniversary of the South Solitary Lighthouse with a guided tour of the historic Lighthouse Optic.
An essential part of our history, the lighthouse optic remains one of the Coffs Harbour Regional Museum's most treasured items. This extraordinary object was made by the Chance Brothers glass works in the UK who were responsible for some of the most ambitious projects that involved constructions in glass. The multifaceted optic is made of glass prisms surrounding a large magnifying glass. The original light emanated from a vaporized kerosene lamp, situated at the center of the optic, giving it a whopping 205,000 candle power!. For display purposes, the optic now has a 200 candle power electric bulb fitted which still provides an magnificent illumination.
Join us for the tour to see this magnificent optic shine!
